Swanson Center

Swanson Center is a Comprehensive Community Mental Health Center serving LaPorte County, Indiana since 1969.  The Center is named after Lucy and Raymond Swanson whose leadership in the Mental Health Association brought resources, hope, and good will to individuals with mental illness as well as to their families. This organization later became a part of the National Association for the Mentally Ill.

There is a broad array of services that Swanson Center’s dedicated staff  provide.  All of these services seek to maximize the individual’s strengths and to assist him or her in becoming as independent as possible. We believe the family unit has the capacity to grow and to become a stable foundation for all of its members. By including the family in the treatment process, doors to better communication and better problem-solving are opened. We see family members learn to laugh more, stress less, and be more involved in the community.

The services provided include individual, group, and family therapy for consumers dealing with addictions, mental health disorders, behavioral problems, domestic violence, sexual offenses, and trauma-related disorders.  Psychiatric services include evaluations, medication monitoring, and consultation with family members and referral sources. Another valuable addition this year has been medication education and support provided by the nurse. Case managers provide consumers with linkage to needed community resources. In addition a primary focus for case managers is to do recovery skills training with the individual, family, and/or group. Residential services are provided for chronically mentally ill adult consumers. We also have a supportive employment program as well as Assertive Community Treatment program.

The Prevention program provides technical assistance for administration of the Afternoons Rock in Indiana Program and Communities that Care serving LaPorte, Porter, Starke, Pulaski, Jasper, Benton, White, Carroll, Cass and Newton Counties.

Swanson Center serves all ages up through the senior years of a consumer’s life. Services are provided in the home and office, and include recovery-oriented skills training, home-based counseling, and school-based therapy.

Swanson Center is a private, not-for-profit agency and is governed by a voluntary Board, and we are accredited by CARF.  We serve over 3000 consumers per year and have approximately 120 employees. Our
